Building up the miles... PDF Print E-mail

Over winter I've been keeping most my runs short (5km to 10km), I completed the Trafford 10KM in 51 minutes recently with a very nice pace of 8:22 per mile consistently across the route (it was a very nice scenic flat route).

With the Manchester 10km coming up, Manchester City 10km in early July, Rivington Half Marathon in September and Hell Runner early November I wanted to start picking up the distance early in the year.

Last Saturday a friend of mine "Lofty" who doesn't run often, did a 6 Mile run a few years ago and plays football decided to come for a Park Run with me (5km), I ran with him to keep him going over the 3 Miles which we finished in around 35 minutes. On the Sunday (as were 23 days away from the Manchester 10km) I figured I needed to start adding the miles again. I set off avoiding roads down some nice country lanes, sheep, dogs, the odd other runner, cyclist (one of which lives on my avenue) and horses running at speed across where I was planning on running. This made me a little nerves so I changed routes and ended up back on the road through Ashton, past IKEA, up to the Garden Centre and then went back onto some trails which took me behind people's houses but away from the cars and traffic (always a plus) back home.

The route ended up being 7 miles... (a mile longer than intended but oh well) which wasn't too bad in 1 hour 4 minutes.

Today (Wednesday) I'm off work (holiday yeah), as I have plans for the rest of the day I decided to get a run in early, up at 6am, peanut butter on toast and a coffee for breakfast and off by 6:45.

It was icy cold and me in shorts, sunglasses, T-shirt and a backpack (blister packs, water, phone and cash) so as you can imagine I got a few funny looks running along the road. I was feeling a little stiff 2 miles in and still a little cold but warmed up and felt good by mile 4. Figured I could keep building up the miles so aimed for 8 but planned the route back along the canal so that I could cut it short at mile 6 or 7 if I was feeling a shattered. Got to mile 7 and was happy enough to continue to 8. I could have probably run further but its not worth pushing my luck :)

I'm aiming to get back up to 10 miles in the next few weeks.

Mike
